IUP golf team sits in 10th place

WHEELING, W.Va. — The IUP men’s golf team sits 10 strokes off the lead in second place after the first round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Super Regional Championships at Oglebay Resort’s Robert Trent Jones Course.

The Crimson Hawks fired a 24-over 308 in the first round and are tied with the Charleston (W.Va.). Wilmington (Del.) is the leader on the par-71 course.

Zack Kempa shot a 4-over 75 in the first round and sits in a tie for sixth place, three shots back of the leader.

Sean Sweithelm, an Indiana High School graduate, shot a 6-over 77, Kenny Sames and Jack Owen each notched a 7-over 78, and Derek Baker finished with a 10-over 81.

Baker eagled No. 8, a par-5 hole, to highlight the Crimson Hawks’ day.

The top three teams at the end of the three-round event will advance to the NCAA Championships in Hershey.
