IUP ROUNDUP: Baseball team splits doubleheader

on March 24, 2013 2:10 AM

MILLERSVILLE — After getting the best of Millersville ace Tim Mayza on Friday, the IUP baseball team couldn’t match the feat against the other half of the Marauders’ 1-2 punch, but the Crimson Hawks still managed a split of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Facing Chris Murphy in the opener, one of the hottest starting pitchers in all of NCAA Division II, IUP mustered just four hits and three walks as Millersville rolled to a 13-0 win.

IUP bounced back to win the second game, 2-1, behind Kyle Zaorski’s complete game, and the Crimson Hawks took three of four games from the Marauders in the weekend set. Both doubleheaders were played at Millersville due to unplayable field conditions at IUP’s Dougherty Field.

Like the opener, Millersville got on the board in the first inning of the second game, taking a 1-0 lead on Jeff Heisey’s two-out RBI single.

But Zaorski settled down after that, allowing two hits and no walks over the final six innings. He got stronger as the game went on, retiring the last eight batters he faced.

Austin mock doubled to lead off the fifth for IUP, and he scored to tie the game at 1 on Jordan DeLuca’s sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Uhl started the inning with a single, moved to third on a sac bunt and a single from Troy Foster, and scored on Jordan Giannini’s RBI single to give IUP its only lead of the day.

Murphy (6-1) was coming off a seven-inning perfect game against Clarion a week ago, and he threw a no-hitter four starts earlier, against Glenville State on Feb. 24.

The reigning Division II pitcher of the week as voted by the NCBWA, Murphy recorded his third complete-game shutout of the season.

The Marauders plated five first-inning runs, raced to a 7-0 lead after the second and never looked back.

Millersville shelled IUP starter Demetrius Christofes, who didn’t get out of the first inning. Christofes gave up five runs on three hits and two walks, and lasted just 1-3 of an inning.

Jared Weed came on in relief, giving up two runs in 4 2-3 innings.

Millersville tacked on six runs over the final two innings.

Zach Stone led Millersville’s 16-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Heisey and Tyler McDonald had three RBIs apiece for the Marauders.

A day earlier, on Friday, IUP broke through for a seventh-inning run against Mayza in a 1-0 win.

IUP handed Mayza his first loss of the season and plated just the fourth earned run Mayza has allowed in 45 innings.

IUP (11-7) visits Shippensburg on Tuesday.

Tennis team wins third straight

IUP won its third straight match to cap a weeklong spring break trip, and the Crimson Hawks got back to .500 on the season with a 9-0 win over Winston-Salem State.

For the second straight day, IUP’s Abby McCormick rallied to win after losing the first set. She won, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the last match to be completed.

Also winning singles matches for IUP were Ranvita Mahto (6-0, 6-0), Tanya Timko (6-1, 6-2), Erika Schnaas (7-5, 6-0), Emilia Osborne (6-1, 6-3), Katie Eaton (6-2, 6-2).

IUP’s doubles teams of Emilia Osborne-Tanya Timko and Abby McCormick-Alanna McFail won by scores of 8-2, while Katie Eaton and Erika Schnaas won 8-3.

IUP (6-6) visits Mercyhurst on Tuesday in a PSAC match.
