IUP ROUNDUP: Cooke named top pitcher
IUP’s Stephen Cooke, who set a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record with 29 1-3 consecutive scoreless innings pitched, has been named the West Division Pitcher of the Week.
Entering his Friday start at Gannon with 18 1-3 straight innings without allowing a run, Cooke tossed 11 shutout innings, striking out eight and scattering eight hits. In a game IUP eventually lost 1-0 in 14 innings, Cooke forced Gannon into 20 ground ball outs, helping the Crimson Hawks set a conference team record with 24 assists. Cooke threw 114 pitches in 11 innings and walked just one of the 40 batters he faced.
Cooke (5-1) leads the conference with 71 strikeouts and ranks sixth in ERA at 1.53.
IUP plays host to Mansfield on Wednesday.
TENNIS: IUP posted its third straight shutout, blanking Slippery Rock, 9-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division women’s match Monday afternoon at the Maple Street Courts.
IUP has not dropped a set during the three-match span and has won nine consecutive matches, improving to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC West and clinching the second seed in the division for next week’s conference tournament.
IUP plays at Clarion today.
