IUP ROUNDUP: Golf team sits in second place
Three IUP golfers finished in the top 12 of the second round of the Whiting-Turner Towson Invitational, helping the Crimson Hawks finish the day in second place at Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, Md.
IUP, which was in fifth place after the first day, made the jump to second place with a combined score of 298 in the second round. The Crimson Hawks enter today’s final round 20 strokes behind leader William & Mary and one stroke ahead of Rutgers and Loyola (Md.).
IUP’s Zack Kempa jumped from fifth place to second place in the individual standings with a 70 in the second round. With a 1-under-par 143, Kempa is three strokes behind William & Mary’s Jeremy Wells for first place.
Indiana grad Sean Sweithelm shot a 4-over 148 and is in a tie for eighth place. Kenny Sames fired a 5-over 149 and is in 11th place.
TENNIS: Sophomore Tanya Timko has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West women’s tennis player of the week.
Timko is the second IUP player in as many weeks to earn the honor. Katie Eaton won the award last week.
The sixth-ranked player in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region, Timko went 8-0 in singles and doubles action last week, helping the Crimson Hawks to a 4-0 record.
IUP (10-6) plays host to Slippery Rock today.
