IUP ROUNDUP: Hawks end on high note
Jasa Mitchell hit two home runs and drove in seven runs to help lead IUP to a sweep of Mercyhurst, 14-1 and 8-5, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference softball games Sunday.
IUP finished the season 26-15. The Crimson Hawks, who won the previous two PSAC championships, did not qualify for the playoffs and won’t get the chance to defend their title.
Mitchell finished 7-for-8 and scored five runs, and IUP finished with 27 hits. Stef McCoy and Christi Mauk each banged out four hits. Mauk and and Stef Poates also hit home runs.
Tara Senn picked up a win and a save, going five innings in the opener and one in the second game.
TENNIS: IUP swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead on West Virginia State before rain suspended play in the second round of the Atlantic Region tournament at IUP’s Maple Street Courts.
The match was scheduled to be completed this morning, with an 11:30 a.m. start at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center in Harmar.
Katie Eaton and Erika Schnaas won 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles spot, Emilia Osborne and Tanya Timko won 8-0 at the No. 2 spot, and Abby McCormick and Alanna McFail won 8-4 at No. 3.
The winner will earn a trip to the Division II Sweet 16 in Surprise, Ariz., next week. IUP is seeking its second straight trip to the round of 16.
TRACK AND FIELD: IUP turned in six NCAA provisional marks at the Penn Relays, which began Thursday and concluded Sunday.
Three marks came in the 3,000-meter steeplechase from Clinton Keller, Alyssa Taddie and Samantha Thompson. Keller ran a 9 minutes, 10.78 seconds in the men’s race. In the women’s race, Taddie, a Homer-Center High School graduate, posted a time of 10:48.71, and Thompson followed at 11:09.66.
In other men’s competition, Jared Long, a United graduate, posted a provisional time of 52:07 in the 400 and finished fourth overall. Ross Moreau, another United graduate, and Michael Turner each hit PSAC qualifying marks in the shot put with tosses of 15.28 and 13.59 meters, respectively.
Kristen Matsko and Jessica Rocco met NCAA provisional marks in women’s competition. Matsko posted a time of 1:02.35 in the 400 hurdles, and Rocco, a Northern Cambria graduate, recorded a throw of 42.45 meters in the javelin.
Steph Beaudette posted a PSAC qualifying time of 17:29.26 in the 5,000 meters, and the 4x400 relay team followed suit with a time of 3:58.40.
IUP competes at Lock Haven on Saturday.
