IUP ROUNDUP: Lacrosse team breezes to 9-0

by The Indiana Gazette on April 10, 2013 10:10 AM

Tuesday was a good day for the IUP women’s lacrosse team.

Hours after breaking into the national Division II poll, the Crimson Hawks capped their day with a 20-3 whipping of Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game played under the lights at Miller Stadium.

IUP improved to 9-0 to extend the best start in school history. Earlier in the day, IUP appeared at No. 14 in the IWLCA Top 15 weekly Division II poll.

The Crimson Hawks also got another bit of good news before the game as senior star player Alexa Lodovici was named the PSAC Athlete of the Week for the second straight week.

In helping IUP go 3-0 last week, Lodovici racked up 10 goals and 18 points, and became IUP’s all-time leader in both categories.

Colleen Berlin led Tuesday’s romp with six goals, while Lodovici and Sarah Ward added four scores apiece.

Tara Nicholas added three goals, Drew Hayden had two and Alex Edwards added one.

IUP scored less than 30 seconds into the game, led 14-1 at halftime and allowed a season-low scoring total with three goals.

IUP visits Mercyhurst (9-2) on Saturday trying to avenge a season-ending loss to the Lakers in the PSAC playoffs last season.

SOFTBALL: IUP pushed its winning streak to seven straight with a doubleheader sweep of Seton Hill. IUP won by scores of 9-2 and 1-0.

Kaylee Prendergast drove in six of IUP’s 10 runs on the day, including the game-winning RBI single in the seventh inning of Game 2.

In the opener, Prendergast totaled three hits and five RBIs. IUP scored three runs in the second and two in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead and never looked back.

Mary Ward was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the opener, and Jasa Mitchell was 2-for-3.

Tara Senn earned both victories for IUP, getting the win in relief in the opener and firing a complete-game five-hit shutout in Game 2.

TENNIS: IUP continued steamrolling toward next week’s PSAC playoffs with a 9-0 win over Clarion, the Crimson Hawks’ 10th straight win and their fourth in a row by a 9-0 score.

Already assured the No. 2 seed out of the PSAC West in next week’s playoffs, IUP wrapped up division play at 4-1.

The Crimson Hawks will play Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals Tuesday, and whether they advance or not, IUP will be the host site for the PSAC semifinals and championship April 19 and 20.

Against Clarion, IUP lost just eight points in six singles matches, winning each in straight sets. Winning in singles play for IUP were Katie Eaton (6-1, 6-1), Tanya Timko (6-0, 6-2), Emilia Osborne (6-0, 6-0), Erika Schnaas (6-2, 6-0), Ranvita Mahto (6-2, 6-0) and Alanna McFail (6-0, 6-0).

Eaton, IUP’s No. 1 player, and Timko each have 21 victories in singles play to lead the team, and both won their 10th straight match Tuesday.

In doubles play, Eaton and Schnaas won 8-0, as did Timko and Osborne, while McFail and Abby McCormick won 8-2.

IUP (13-6) visits West Liberty on Friday before wrapping up the regular season at home Saturday against West Virginia State.
