IUP ROUNDUP: Lacrosse team remains unbeaten, set for showdown
The IUP women’s lacrosse team didn’t get caught looking ahead.
With an all-important showdown with West Chester looming today — perhaps the program’s biggest game ever — the Crimson Hawks first had to get past Kutztown (2-11) to open a two-game weekend homestand.
And they had no problem getting past the struggling Golden Bears.
Colleen Berlin and Drew Hayden scored four goals apiece as IUP ripped Kutztown, 18-3, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game at Miller Stadium on Friday.
Sarah Ward, Amy Weinberg and Alexa Lodovici added two goals apiece, and Lodovici tied a season high with six assists.
Also scoring for IUP were Alex Edwards, Michelle Zakrzewski, Brenna Gallagher and Brittney Palardy, with one goal apiece.
After Kutztown scored the first goal of the game, IUP responded with seven straight scores and the took an 8-2 halftime lead.
The teams sat through a lightning delay in the second half, but it didn’t slow down the Crimson Hawks. They poured on 10 more goals in the second half for another blowout win.
Chelsey Hipp earned the win in goal for IUP.
IUP and West Chester play at 5:30 this evening.
IUP, ranked No. 13, improved to 11-0 and 8-0 in the PSAC. Ranked No. 5 in the country, West Chester is 10-2, 7-0.
TENNIS: IUP’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship semifinal match with Kutztown was postponed due to rain with the Crimson Hawks leading the Golden Bears 3-0 after doubles play Friday. The match was picked up at 9 a.m. today.
The doubles team of Tanya Timko and Emilia Osborne picked up the first victory for the Crimson Hawks, defeating Rachel Grula and Tori Zander 8-0.
Abby McCormick and Alanna McFail then beat Emily Troast and Cindy Good 8-1 before Katie Eaton and Erika Schnaas won 8-4.
Due to the change in schedule, the men’s and women’s championship matches have been pushed back to Sunday morning.
