IUP ROUNDUP: Rugby team takes third in nation
IUP bounced back from a loss in the national semifinals and capped the best season in the club team’s history by finishing third in the USA Rugby NCAA Division II women’s tournament Sunday.
IUP scored two tries in the final 15 minutes of the match to rally for a 19-17 win over Florida International in the third-place game.
Making their first trip to the Final Four, the Scooters lost to Cal State Northridge, 15-10, in the semifinals Saturday. IUP took a 5-0 lead before the Matadors scored 15 straight points to take a double-digit lead. IUP made a late charge, but the Scooters ran out of time to stage a comeback.
The Scooters, a club team, went 7-0 during the regular season in the fall to earn a bid to the USA Rugby Division II Sweet 16. IUP won a pair of matches there to advance to the Final Four for the first time since the club’s formation in 1996.
TRACK AND FIELD: IUP seniors Krista Matsko and Samantha Thompson have qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, which will be held May 22 to 24 at Allendale, Mich.
Matsko will compete in the 400-meter hurdles. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion is seeded 11th with a personal-best time of 1 minute, .02 seconds.
Thompson will compete in the 3,000 steeplechase. The PSAC champion is seeded 10th with a personal-best time of 10:47.63.
TENNIS: IUP lost to Barry (Fla.), the top-ranked team in the country, 5-0, on the first day of the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships Wednesday in Alamonte Springs, Fla.
IUP closed the season at 19-10 following its fourth consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference runner-up finished and its fourth straight trip to the NCAA round of 16.
Barry (25-1) is the top-ranked team in the country.
