IUP ROUNDUP: Softball team stays alive in PSAC tournament
After dropping the first game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs, the IUP softball team rebounded to beat Edinboro early this morning and stay alive in the double-elimination tournament in Quakertown.
The Crimson Hawks lost to Shippensburg, 7-1, in the opener, but then used a two-run home run from Angela Devereaux to break a tie in the eighth inning and beat the Fighting
Scots, 7-5. IUP (30-14) takes on Bloomsburg (27-16) today at 3:30 p.m., with the winner moving on and loser going home.
Devereaux’s homer came with Mary Ward on second base. Reliever Alexa Campbell then worked a perfect bottom of the eighth to earn the win.
Megan Gould had three hits to pace the IUP offense, and Devereaux, Hannah Mercer, Stefanie McCoy and Meghan Carney had two hits apiece. The Crimson Hawks outhit Edinboro, 13-7.
The game started Thursday at 9:50 p.m., and ended at 12:20 a.m., today. The game against Shippensburg was scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m., but first pitch wasn’t until 6 p.m. because of poor field conditions.
The Raiders blasted two homers in the opening inning to take an early 3-0 lead, but IUP counted with a solo shot by McCoy to lead off the second. Shippensburg then had another two-run homer in the sixth and added two more runs in the seventh.
TRACK AND FIELD: Nick Patton finished fifth in the men’s 10,000 meters on the opening day of the PSAC championships at Shippensburg.
Patton finished with a time of 31 minutes, 47.16 seconds in the event, a little over a minute off the pace. California’s Aaron Dinzeo took first place with a time of 30:34.22. In the same event, Matt Rutt placed ninth (32:49.88), Alexander Hampel took 11th (33:26.52) and Greg Beaudette was 13th with a time of 33:45.33.
On the women’s side, Katie Koenig was IUP’s highest finisher in the 10,000 meters. She finished eighth with a time of 38:55.14.
Katie Barrett and Lauren Lyons also ran in the event, finishing 10th and 12th with times of 39:56.57 and 40:37.48, respectively.
