Hannah Mercer and Christi Mauk homered for the second straight day as the IUP softball team racked up 17 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Gannon in PSAC West action Wednesday.
A day after sweeping Seton Hill to open division play, IUP took two from Gannon, 6-2 and 4-2, and the Crimson Hawks stand in first place in the West Division.
In the second game, Mercer hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the third inning to give IUP a 2-1 lead.
Meghan Carney got IUP on the board with an RBI double in the second to tie the game at 1.
Then, in the sixth, Mauk hit a solo home run and Kaylee Prendergast added a run-scoring single to make it 4-1.

TENNIS: Tanya Timko continued her recent torrid stretch, and Ranvita Mahto moved into third place on the school’s singles wins list in IUP’s 7-2 win over Slippery Rock in a PSAC West match. The Crimson Hawks won their fifth straight match.
Timko beat Nikolina Grbac, 6-3, 6-3, at the top singles spot to run her personal winning streak to five. Grbac was ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region.
Timko teamed up with Erika Schnaas for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. Since being paired up on March 27, Timko and Schnaas have gone 5-0. Timko has gone a combined 10-0 during IUP’s current five-match winning streak.
Earlier Wednesday, Timko was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week.

Meanwhile, Mahto needed a huge rally to earn career singles win No. 68. After dropping the opening set 3-6, she won the next one 6-2, but quickly found herself trailing 5-0 in the third-set super breaker. She rallied to tie it at 7 and eventually won 11-9. She sits 13 wins behind Katie Eaton, who graduated last spring with a school-record 81 singles victories.
