IUP TENNIS: Crimson Hawks win playoff opener
Alanna McFail scored a match-clinching 6-2, 6-1 win in singles play to help lift IUP to a 5-1 win over Mercyhurst in the quarterfinal-round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference team playoffs at the Maple Street Courts on Wednesday.
The Crimson Hawks advanced to Friday’s semifinals and will face Kutztown, the top seed out of the PSAC East.
The second seed in the West, IUP won its 13th straight match overall and improved to 16-6 on the season.
The Crimson Hawks came out of doubles play with a 2-1 lead, with the teams of Tanya Timko and Emilia Osborne and Abby McCormick and McFail posting wins.
McCormick picked up IUP’s first win in singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Ranvita Mahto won 6-3, 6-1 before McFail’s match-ending win.
IUP will serve as the host for the semifinals and finals of the PSAC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships.
The IUP women’s semifinal match with Kutztown is set for Friday at 11 a.m.
California and Millersville will play in the first semifinal at 9 a.m.
