IUP TENNIS: Hawks advance to Sweet 16, headed to Arizona

The IUP women’s tennis team is headed to Arizona.

In a match that spanned two days and was moved indoors due to continuous rain in the area, the Crimson Hawks blanked West Virginia State, 5-0, to advance to the NCAA Division II championships round of 16.

IUP (19-7) advances to play Southwest Baptist in the round of 16 in Surprise, Ariz., on May 8. IUP has reached the round of 16 for the second straight season.

Erika Schnaas clinched IUP’s victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.

Ranvita Mahto won Monday’s first completed singles match, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6.

IUP won all three of the doubles matches at the Maple Street Courts on Sunday.

The teams of Tanya Timko and Emilia Osborne, Abby McCormick and Alanna McFail, and Katie Eaton and Schnaas each notched wins.
