IUP TENNIS: Hawks return to round of 16
HARMAR TOWNSHIP — IUP advanced to the NCAA Division II round of 16 for the fourth straight season, beating West Virginia State, 5-3, in the Atlantic Region tournament Sunday.
The match was scheduled to be played at IUP but was moved indoors to Alpha Tennis and Fitness due to the threat of inclement weather.
Sophie Butland clinched the victory at the second singles spot, scoring a 6-4, 6-3 win over Andreea Slusarciuc. IUP won two other singles matches, with Tanya Timko cruising past Brittany Franco, 6-1, 6-1, and Ranvita Mahto topping Diana Cortoros, 6-3, 6-3.
IUP took a 2-1 lead with a pair of doubles victories. Butland and Mahto defeated Cora Berna and Nadia Grlj, 8-4, and Alanna McFail and Rachel Wood beat Cotoros and Charlotte Sandy, 8-4.
Timko and Erika Schnaas, the second-ranked pairing in the region, fell to Slusarciuc and Franco, 8-5.
IUP will face Barry (Fla.), the top-ranked team in the country, in Altamonte Springs, Fla., on May 14.
