by The Indiana Gazette on June 02, 2013 2:40 AM

Behind a seven-run first inning, the Young Township Renegades pulled away from the Post 493 Pirates and won 13-0 in an Indiana County Senior Legion baseball game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Tanner Baylor got the offense rolling for the Renegades by leading off the bottom of the first with a triple, one of his three hits on the day. Adam Deruelle also contributed three hits.

“Baylor and Deruelle got the offense going,” Young Township coach Barry Thomas said. “Baylor’s leadoff triple really set the tone for us.”

Mitchel Yard tripled and drove in two runs, and Steve Babyak added a double for the Renegades, who picked up 11 hits.

Ian Satler picked up the win, going all five innings and allowing two hits. He struck out eight and walked five.

For Post 493, Weyland McGeary and Jacob Vilcek picked up the only hits.

INDIANA LIONS 11, UNITED NRG 4: After seeing its early four-run lead evaporate, Indiana Lions responded with a six-run fifth inning and pulled away from visiting United NRG.

Ben Strong hit a two-run triple with one out to break a 4-4 tie and spark Indiana Lions’ fifth-inning outburst.

Isaak Gray had three hits, including a double, and Taylor Hudzicki added three singles to lead Indiana Lions’ 11-hit attack.

Gray also earned the win, pitching the final 3 1-3 innings in relief. He struck out seven and walked one.

United tied the game at 4 with a pair of runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings after Indiana Lions took a 4-0 lead with a four-run second.

Both teams play Monday. Indiana Lions (5-1) welcomes Young Township, and United NRG visits Clymer Legion.

S.W. JACK 12, CLYMER 2: Holding a slim 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, S.W. Jack broke out for nine runs, which triggered the 10-run mercy rule in a win over Clymer Legion.

In the nine-run fifth inning, Zach Schultz hit a two-run home run, and Colton Johnson delivered a two-run single.

S.W. Jack took a 3-2 lead in the third on the strength of Chase Kromer’s two-run single.

Cole Shaffer went 3-for-3 and Bobby Bell, Schultz and Kromer each finished with two hits.

Bell and Kromer teamed up on a one-hitter. Bell pitched the first three innings and Kromer the last two.

Garrett Crowe recorded the only hit for Clymer Legion.

Clymer Legion plays host to United on Monday, and S.W. Jack welcomes I-Medical on Tuesday.

DERRY 10, MARION CENTER 2: Derry plated at least one run in each of the first five innings and raced to a victory over winless Marion Center.

Derry started pulling away with two runs in the third for a 4-1 lead. The visitors pushed the lead to 7-2 with two runs in the fifth and put the finishing touch on the rout with a three-run seventh.

Thomas Cole and Anthony Oshie had two hits apiece to lead Derry, while Damian Hoffman, Alex Rebtoy and Brandon Brinker collected doubles for the visitors.
