SENIOR LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Stiles, Marion Center outlast Kovacik in 10
Marion Center’s Jared Selkirk scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning on a bases-loaded walk to Matt Popovich as Marion Center rallied for a 3-2 win over Kovacik Insurance in an Indiana County Senior Legion baseball game Sunday.
C.J. Stiles pitched all 10 innings for Marion Center to earn the win. He struck out 10 batters and didn’t issue a walk while allowing just three hits.
“I kept asking him if he wanted to come out,” Marion Center head coach Joe Bunyak said. “He kept telling me he wanted to stay in. He wanted it.”
Although the game went 10 innings, neither team recorded an error and only three combined walks were issued — including the decisive one at the end.
“It was a very well-played game by both ball clubs,” Bunyak said.
Popovich, Selkirk and Stiles combined for six of Marion Center’s nine hits.
Bobby Gaston doubled to lead Kovacik Insurance.
MARION CENTER 3, POST 493 1: In a game played Saturday, Marion Center got a tiebreaking two-run single from Adam Tomayko in the bottom of the third and held on for the victory.
After a leadoff walk to Matt Popovich and an error by Homer City’s Garrett Omasta, Tomayko roped a two-run single to help back Popovich on the mound.
In four innings of work, Popovich struck out five batters and walked just one to earn the win.
“He’s been dealing with a shoulder injury,” Marion Center head coach Joe Bunyak said. “He wanted me to give him some work, so I did. He rewarded me with a very solid outing. He battled all four innings and really kept us in it.”
Austin Fairman took the loss for Post 493. He struck out three and walked one.
Fairman also provided the majority of the offense for Homer City, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the third inning.
