SOFTBALL: Thousands set to play at area fields
Nearly 140 girls’ softball teams will converge on the Indiana area for the fourth annual IUP Summer Showcase Tournament this weekend.
The showcase features 138 teams made up of 4,000 players in five age divisions playing 385 games on Friday through Sunday on fields in Indiana, Clymer, Creekside, Elderton, Homer City, Shelocta and Armstrong Township. Each team will play four games Friday and Saturday to determine seeding in Sunday’s single-elimination championship round.
The tournament field consists mainly of teams from western Pennsylvania but also includes several from central and eastern Pennsylvania, two from Maryland and one from Canada. The five divisions are for players ranging in age from 10 to 18.
Friday’s action also includes a Player Showcase for college coaches at 8 p.m. at Optimist Park at the Indiana Little League complex. The individual showcase consists of 120 players, and 31 college coaches registered in advance to watch the action.
The tournament is being conducted by the IUP softball team in conjunction with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the Indiana Optimist Club, the YMCA of Indiana County, 10 community partners and 24 corporate sponsors.
