by The Indiana Gazette on June 13, 2013 10:29 AM

Kovacik Insurance mustered just four hits but played solid defense and plated the game’s last seven runs to score a 7-3 win over S.W. Jack and break a first-place tie in an Indiana County Youth Legion baseball game Wednesday at WyoTech Park.

Omar Ward gave Kovacik Insurance its first lead of the game when he belted an RBI double that plated Ryan Shirley to make it 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ward later scored on a passed ball to extend Kovacik Insurance’s lead to 5-3.

An inning later, Joseph Faulk and John Fetchko each got hit by a pitch before scoring on squeeze bunts from Bubba Seitz and Corey Ramsden, extending Kovacik Insurance’s lead to 7-3.

“We played some nice small ball in the sixth,” Kovacik Insurance manager Dan Shirley said. “We had a couple good bunts and some nice base running, and that really broke it open.”

Winning pitcher Josh Daugherty struck out 11, walked one and allowed seven hits in a complete-game effort.

“Josh has been our horse all year,” Shirley said. “He throws strikes. He changes speed. He’s definitely one of the best pitchers in the league.”

Ward led Kovacik Insurance with two hits.

S.W. Jack’s Ryan Palmer singled twice.

Kovacik Insurance stayed in first place by improving to 8-2. I-Medical maintained a tie for first by knocking off United, 9-8, on Wednesday.

S.W. Jack (7-3) fell into fourth place, a half-game behind Young Township (7-2). The two teams meet Friday at Bertolino Field in West Lebanon.

Kovacik Insurance plays at United on Friday.

WALBECK INSURANCE 4, FEZELL ENTERPRISES 1: Adam McCombs drilled a three-run double in the third inning to help Walbeck Insurance outlast Fezell Enterprises for a win in a pitchers’ duel at First Commonwealth Field in Homer City.

With one out in the bottom of the third, McCombs broke a scoreless tie and gave Walbeck Insurance a 3-0 lead by ripping a bases-loaded double to left-center field that plated Logan Dellafiora, Stephen Novak and Jayke Saiani.

“Both pitchers were doing really well, but Adam’s really been swinging the bat lately,” Walbeck Insurance manager Doug McNulty said. “He just saw a fastball down in the zone, and he drove it pretty good to the gap in left-center field. By the time the left fielder was picking up the ball, Logan was already rounding third base and scoring from first.”

McCombs led Walbeck Insurance with two hits.

Novak struck out five, walked four and allowed four hits in five innings to earn the win. Alex Arone struck out three and allowed no hits in two innings of relief.

Losing pitcher Keeston Perry struck out seven, walked three and allowed four hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Both teams play Friday. Walbeck Insurance (4-5) travels to Marion Center, and Fezell Enterprises (4-6) plays host to Clymer Legion.

I-MEDICAL 9, UNITED NRG 8: John Matthews scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift I-Medical to a win over United in Punxsutawney.

United pitcher Kolt Jarvis threw a wild pitch with two outs in the seventh, allowing Matthews to score from third to end the game.

Dakota Byers doubled twice to power I-Medical.

Lance Pennington struck out three and walked one in one inning of relief to get the win.

Dalton Mack doubled twice for United.

Both teams play Friday. I-Medical (8-2) plays host to Derry, and United welcomes Kovacik Insurance.
