YOUTH LEGION BASEBALL: Kovacik edges Young Township

by The Indiana Gazette on May 16, 2013 10:20 AM

Kovacik Insurance mounted a big rally in the third inning of a pitchers’ duel, and then held off a late push from Young Township to secure a 5-4 win in an Indiana County Youth Legion baseball game Wednesday at Bertolino Field.

With the game tied 1-1, Kovacik Insurance plated four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. John Fetsko sparked the onslaught by smacking a bases-loaded double that plated all three runners.

Young Township plated a run on two walks in the seventh to cut Kovacik Insurance’s lead to one run, 5-4.

But Kovacik Insurance reliever Josh Daugherty struck out a batter and induced a pair of flyouts to seal the win.

“They were very patient at the plate and they ended up drawing eight walks,” Young Township manager Jack Yard said. “Then the Fetsko boy stepped up and hit a big double. He cleared the bases. That was definitely the turning point in the game.”

Daugherty singled and doubled to lead Kovacik Insurance.

Winning pitcher Ryan Shirley struck out eight, walked one and allowed six hits in six innings.

Tanner Yard went 3-for-3 with a double to pace Young Township. Brady Neal finished 2-for-3.

Young Township’s Devin Fairman struck out six and allowed five hits in a complete-game effort.

Young Township (1-1) travels to Gorell Windows on Monday, and Kovacik Insurance (2-0) plays host to Derry on Thursday.

S.W. JACK 11, MARION CENTER 0: S.W. Jack’s Chase Kromer tossed a no-hitter, and the Black Sox plated six runs in the third inning to blank Marion Center, 11-0, in a game at S&T Bank Field that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Kromer struck out eight and walked five. Kromer also doubled and drove in three runs.

Ryan Palmer finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs for S.W. Jack. Jake Kelly belted an RBI double.

Marion Center (0-3) visits Clymer Legion this evening, and S.W. Jack (3-0) travels to Marion Center on Friday.
