YOUTH LEGION BASEBALL: Three reach state tourney
Norwin PAL totaled 10 runs in the seventh inning to best Hempfield East, 16-7, in the Pennsylvania Youth American Legion Western Regional Tournament on Tuesday at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.
Norwin PAL’s Nick Lagnese earned a complete-game win.
Ryan Anselmino singled three times to pace Norwin PAL.
Both teams qualified for the state tournament, which begins this weekend.
Norwin PAL faces Albion today, with the winner advancing to play for the regional championship against Hempfield East.
ALBION 4, EAST ERIE 1: In the second game of Day 4 of the tournament, Albion erased an early one-run deficit and mounted rallies in the second, third and fourth inning to outlast East Erie in an elimination game and qualify for the state tournament.
Pete Buckoski struck out five in four innings to pick up the win. Jon Solberg fanned four in three innings of relief.
Losing pitcher Dominic Rupp struck out five in four innings.
HEMPFIELD EAST 15, EAST ERIE 8: In the first game of the day, Hempfield East jumped out to an early nine-run lead and amassed 19 hits to rout East Erie and earn a berth in the state tournament.
Zack Kokoska struck out five in four innings to notch the win. Zach Camarute fanned two in 1 2-3 innings of relief.
Dan Stas, Jacob Hefner, Nick Altier and Zayne Zalich each doubled for Hempfield East.
Omar Ramos and Anthony Squigilia each singled twice for East Erie.
