MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: Ryan's club drops playoff opener
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Michael Ryan’s playoff debut didn’t go according to plan.
Visiting Hagerstown used a four-run fourth inning to jump on the host West Virginia Power and score a 6-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Class A affiliate in the opening game of the South Atlantic League semifinal series. Ryan, a 1996 graduate of Indiana High School, is in his rookie season as the manager of the Power.
Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is Friday, in Hagerstown, Md. The winner of the series meets the Augusta-Savannah winner in the finals. Savannah won its semifinal series opener Wednesday, 10-2.
West Virginia went 82-58 this season, the best overall record in the Northern Division. That includes a 45-25 mark in the second half of the season. The teams with the best first-half and second-half records meet in the semifinals.
Hagerstown finished the first half in first place, at 38-29, but was three games behind the Power in the second half.
