MLB: McCutchen reportedly headed for DL

PITTSBURGH — The Pirates’ road to another winning season and playoff berth might be a whole lot bumpier now.

According to several published reports, outfielder Andrew McCutchen, the defending National League MVP, is headed to the disabled list after straining an oblique muscle in Pittsburgh’s 3-2 loss to Arizona on Sunday.

As of this morning, the Pirates had not announced any roster moves. If McCutchen is placed on the disabled list, a player will likely be recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis to take his spot.

Starling Marte, Pittsburgh’s opening-day left fielder, could move over to center field to take McCutchen’s place. Travis Snider likely would come off the bench to take over in left field. Marte has been with Indianapolis the past few days on a rahabilitation assignment as he recovers from a concussion. He could be activated as early as today.

McCutchen left Sunday’s game in the eighth inning after his at-bat, when he winced and grabbed his side after hitting a sacrifice fly that scored Josh Harrison from third base.

The injury is reportedly not related to being hit in the back by a pitch from Arizona reliever Randall Delgado during Saturday’s game, an 8-3 win.

McCutchen is batting .311 with 17 home runs and 67 RBIs. He has never been on the disabled list in his career.
