Former Hopewell High School and Pitt running back Rushel Shell has decided to transfer to West Virginia, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has reported.

The newspaper attributed the news to Shell’s mother, Toni Zuccaro.

Shell will have to sit out the 2013 season, as per NCAA transfer rules, but he will have three years of eligibility left, starting with the 2014 season.

Shell, the leading rusher in the history of Pennsylvania high school football (9,078 yards) played one season at Pitt, where he rushed for 641 yards and scored four touchdowns last fall as a true freshman.

He left the Panthers this spring, and he later announced he would transfer to UCLA.

But before Shell could enroll at UCLA, he backed out and said he would transfer to a school closer to home. He said his top three choices were West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio State before settling on West Virginia.

At one time, Pitt and West Virginia were bitter rivals, but with the Mountaineers joining the Big 12 and Pitt headed to the ACC, the series in on hiatus.

During his high school career, Shell played once in Indiana County. He rushed for 269 yards and scored four touchdowns in a 41-13 Hopewell win over Indiana at Andy Kuzneski Field in the first round of the 2011 WPIAL Class AAA playoffs.
