Penn State beats Hampton in CBI tournament
STATE COLLEGE — Penn State’s Geno Thorpe made all four of his free throw attempts in the final 30 seconds of the game, and the Nittany Lions held off Hampton, 69-65, in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational on Wednesday.
Four Penn State players finished in double figures in scoring to help the Nittany Lions advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. They will face off with Siena on Monday night at the Times Union Center in Loudonville, N.Y.
D.J. Newbill led PSU with 19 points, Brandon Taylor added 14 and Tim Frazier and Thorpe scored 10 points each.
The Nittany Lions opened the game on an 8-0 run and held a 33-25 lead at halftime. Hampton went on its own 8-0 run to take the lead at the 11:47 mark in the second half, but the Nittany Lions prevailed down the stretch.
Brian Darden posted a game-high 22 points for the Pirates and made four 3-point field goals.
