PIRATES 6, ANGELS 1: Liriano, Bucs beat L.A.

LOS ANGELES — Francisco Liriano allowed one run over 6 2-3 innings, and the Pittsburgh Pirates hit three home runs in a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night.

Liriano (6-3) allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out six as the Pirates (45-30) improved to a season-high 15 games over .500. They are second in the National League Central, two games behind the St. Louis Cardinals and 1οΎ½ games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds.

Pedro Alvarez, Andrew McCutchen and Gaby Sanchez hit solo home runs for the Pirates. Alvarez homered in a three-run second, his 18th of the season, and drove in his 50th run of the season.

McCutchen hits his eighth homer of the season and in the fifth, and Sanchez followed with his sixth in the sixth.

Sanchez, Alvarez and Neil Walker each had two of the Pirates’ 10 hits.

Bryan Morris and Justin Wilson followed in relief of Liriano and combined to allow one hit and three walks.

Jerome Williams (5-3) took the loss. He allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings.

The Pirates won the first two games of the interleague series. The final game is set for 3:35 p.m. today with the Pirates’ Charlie Morton (1-1) going against Joe Blanton (1-10).
