Indiana County’s downward population trend reflects that of much of Pennsylvania, according to figures made available this week by the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

The county’s estimated population as of July 1, 2018, is 84,501, a decrease of 4,388, or 4.9 percent, from 88,880 reported on April 1, 2010.

Still, Indiana only slipped one notch to 35th place among the state’s 67 counties, swapping places with Crawford County.

The estimated population of Indiana County has declined each year since 2010. It was 88,865 on July 1, 2010; 88,619 on July 1, 2011; 88,220 on July 1, 2012; 88,142 on July 1, 2013; 87,423 on July 1, 2014; and 86,773 on July 1, 2015.

In that same eight-year period:

• Armstrong County dropped 3,681, or 5.3 percent, from 68,944 to 65,263, slipping to 39th place behind Columbia County.

• Cambria County dropped 11,951 or 8.3 percent, from 143,681 to 131,730, slipping to 26th place with Lebanon moving up past Cambria and Fayette (27th) into 25th place.

• Clearfield remained the 36th-largest Pennsylvania county, though it slipped 2,228, or 2.7 percent, from 81,616 to 79,388.

• Jefferson County dropped 1,548, or 3.4 percent, from 45,189 to 43,641, and swapped its former 49th rank for 50th behind Union County.

• Westmoreland dropped from the list of Pennsylvania’s 10 largest counties, as its population fell 14,583, or 4 percent, from 365,194 to 350,611, while Lehigh County moved up a notch from 11th place.

The rest of the top 10 is unchanged from 2010: Philadelphia, Allegheny, Montgomery, Bucks, Delaware, Lancaster, Chester, York and Berks.

After the estimate took its most notable one-year drop, to 85,200 on July 1, 2016, a slower slide resumed the following year, to 84,870 on July 1, 2017, and 84,501 on July 1, 2018.

Other figures about Indiana County available from the Bureau of the Census for July 1, 2018:

• Median household income was $46,306.

• Those in poverty made up 14.7 percent of the population.

• Those with high school diplomas or higher made up 89.6 percent.

• Approximately one in three households, or 30.3 percent, do not have a broadband internet subscription.

• Those younger than 65 without health insurance made up 7.3 percent of the population.

• The median housing value was $111,200; there were 38,849 total housing units; total number of companies was 7,036; and the total number of military veterans was 5,579 in Indiana County.
