KENWOOD — A Penns Manor Area High School alumnus who was her college’s valedictorian this spring is coming home to teach third-graders.

Superintendent Daren Johnston introduced four teachers hired by the Penns Manor Area School District’s board of education during a busy hourlong meeting Thursday night.

Three of them will earn starting salaries of $41,212 per a new contract with the Penns Manor Education Association that will take effect Aug. 1.

Johnston said third-grade teacher Amanda Lucas is a 2015 Penns Manor graduate and valedictorian this spring at Waynesburg University.

Lucas was hired along with fifth-grade teacher Kaitlyn Deptola, a certified education and special education teacher and reading specialist, who was a long-term substitute this past year in the Marion Center Area and Indiana Area districts; and special education teacher Alison Decker who served for the past year and a half as a junior high emotional support teacher in the Penns Manor district.

The board also approved hiring Kristen Kuzemchak as a health/physical education teacher at the contract level of Instructional II, Bachelor’s Degree plus 20 credits, Step A, for $54,776 for the coming year.

Johnston said Kuzemchak taught for 11 years in Rockwood, Somerset County, and brings certifications for physical education, health, family and consumer education.

Other personnel actions taken by the board included:

• Approving Sarah Russel as a volunteer working with the majorettes.

• Appointing Stephen Repik at $11 per hour for 1,100 hours and Carrie Patterson at $9 per hour for 1,015 hours doing agriculture community resource work.

• Accepting Christine Gibson’s resignation as junior class adviser and authorizing advertising of that position.

• Adding, pending receipt of current clearances, medical testing and education courses, fall sports volunteer coaches Carson Rhea, Mark Dalton, Bob Packer, Brad Packer, Andrew Somogyi, Zach Johnston, James Harvey and Chad Kuzemchak.

• Adding Jeremy Puckett as a Tri-County Transportation driver for the rest of the 2018-19 school year.

• Approving lump-sum summer pay for Erica Lauer should funds be available.

As the board approved the continued services of Dr. David Sparks as district dentist for $1 per examination, Johnston commended Sparks for serving the district for over 30 years.

“This is his last year coming up,” Johnston told the board.

The board also approved a three-year agreement with Edlio to service the district’s website for $4,200 per year. Other contracts were approved for 2019-20 with:

• Clymer Family Medicine at $40 per physical as district physician

• Church Mutual Insurance Company for worker’s compensation coverage at a cost of $34,241

• Various entities for medical trust, vision trust and dental trust rates

• Gittings Protective Security Inc. of Ebensburg for daytime and evening event security services

• Johnstown Safety Services for safety consultative services

• ESGI for access to online assessments in primary grades at the elementary school, at a total cost of $2,576

• Career Cruising for continued access to services for the junior and senior high school, at a total cost of $1,700
