Rayne's Backyard BBQ

Rayne's Backyard BBQ's is opening at the site of the former PA BBQ.

Things are falling in place for a Fourth of July opening for Rayne’s Backyard BBQ in White Township.

“We are truly blessed to have this opportunity to be a part of the community,” said Terrance Ballard, owner of the new restaurant at 2045 S. Sixth St., as well as the Rayne’s Backyard BBQ adjacent to what now is known as First Summit Arena at the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown.

He said he feels blessed by the love shown to him in both locations.

Ballard promised to work hard to give his customers the service they have received, first when he started his business in the Hornerstown section of Johnstown in June 2014, now for “going on four years” at his War Memorial location.

Both establishments tout a low-and-slow process of cooking ribs, chicken, pulled pork and brisket, part of a menu that has fans on both sides of the Cambria-Indiana county line.

“We have a lot of people that are familiar with our food from the hockey team (the Johnstown Tomahawks of the North American Hockey League), and from IUP,” Ballard said.

“A lot of our customers are from up there,” Ballard said. “One patron drives all the way from Indiana to get barbecue from us.”

Ballard, 51, named his original location, as well as the new one just outside Indiana, for his daughter Rayne.

That new location is in what formerly was the PA Barbecue restaurant.

“This opportunity came up for us and we jumped on it,” he said.

The final touches are being put on that new location. He said he received a clean bill of health in an inspection Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The menu will include items for the kids, including chicken strips, a small pulled pork sandwich or a hot dog with fries, or ribs with mac-n-cheese.

There also is a vegan menu with “beyond burger,” “beyond sausage” and plant-based nuggets, all served with french fries.

Appetizers, specialties that even include alligator sausage and buffalo elk venison, sides and dinner specials also are on the menu.
