Congratulations to all the young athletes pictured in the Gazette Saturday with their winning medals at the State Games of America competitions.

Normally they would have been competing at Pennsylvania’s largest amateur athletic competition, the annual Keystone State Games. However, this year Pennsylvania hosted the biennial national State Games of America competition with more than 10,000 athletes from 45 states competing.

Athletes must qualify in order to compete, and only the elite competitors are accepted into the competitions for gold, silver or bronze medals. These athletes are the future Olympic hopefuls. Most of the medals garnered were achieved by 1/100th of a second time differences. Even the parents and coaches couldn’t spot the winners in the very competitive fields.

For Indiana County youngsters to compete so successfully against all those other talented individuals is spectacular.

They, their dedicated coaches and their encouraging families are to be commended on their fabulous success and for bringing back pride and recognition to Indiana County. Congratulations to all involved.
