Letter to the Editor: Addiction as disease questioned
I have followed the current articles in the Gazette series “A Sobering Story,” which are well-informed on addictions.
But I have an issue with the headline, “The disease of addiction.”
Alcohol addiction is not a disease — it will cause diseases ... and will ruin the body over time.
Putting a needle in your arm is a choice — not a disease.
Smoking three packs a day is a choice — not a disease.
Drinking excessively is a choice — not a disease.
AA has only a 5 percent to 10 percent chance of success, but Sunday’s article on “Dan” had the best solution (“Addict values second chance.”)
