Letter to the Editor: Disrespecting those who served with honor
It has been alleged that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl did, in fact, walk away from his unit and installation during hostile action in Afghanistan five years ago. If proven, this action by Bergdahl constitutes nothing short of desertion and is punishable by court-martial.
And yet our president has seen fit to exchange five terrorists for his safe return. It has also been alleged that at least two of his fellow soldiers were killed while attempting to locate him.
Those of us who served our country honorably in Vietnam were asked to sneak back into our own country. We were told prior to boarding the freedom bird to be sure to remove our uniform once we arrived in San Francisco. I was spit upon, had bottles thrown at me and was called a baby killer — the consequence for being awarded the Bronze Star and doing what was asked of me!
And what is in store for this alleged deserter? A buoyant homecoming.
Mr. President, your decision was a slap in the face for all who served this country with honor.
