MARY LOU ZANICH: Support your local libraries
During the next year, the American Library Association’s presidential initiative will focus on the theme “Libraries Change Lives.”
During the year, members of communities across the nation will be asked to express their support for libraries of all types — local, academic, and school — by signing The Declaration for the Right to Libraries. It is hoped that such signing ceremonies will increase awareness and foster dialogue about the many critical roles that quality libraries play as they help meet the educational, informational and recreational needs of community residents of all ages.
Libraries have been an essential feature of our democratic society since the time of Benjamin Franklin, and they embody our First Amendment right to freedom of speech.
Indiana Free Library will sponsor its first declaration-signing ceremony on Saturday.
For a half-hour before, during and a half hour after IUP’s Homecoming Parade, we will have a table set up in front of the public library at the corner of Ninth and Philadelphia streets. Please stop by and indicate your support for our community library. Libraries do change lives.
