RON WESTOVER: Christians and same-sex marriage

To clarify an earlier letter I wrote, marriage is not solely for procreation. In a discussion of redefining marriage to include two men or two women, it would seem only to make sense to look at the origin of the very first marriage of the Bible.

God created the first family, a man and woman (husband and wife), who could bring forth children. If God would have created the first family as two men or two women, we would not be here today. God has never altered His design of the family.

As Christians we should adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ on marriage. First, we should define what it means to be a Christian. A Christian is one who follows the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Becoming a Christian is not a label we choose, it is the result of a life change.

Those who are Christians according to Scripture are those who have acknowledged their own sinful ways and seek forgiveness through faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

And at the point of conversion they commit to turn from pursuing their own way of life to live by the teachings of Jesus. If one truly becomes a Christian, they will continually seek to shape their lives and thinking as their savior, Jesus Christ.

When Jesus was questioned about marriage, he referenced the Genesis account.

He did not first consider the rate of failed marriages; he simply spoke the truth. He said, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? … What God has joined together, let no man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6)

If Jesus used Genesis as the foundation to define marriage, shouldn’t we as Christians do the same? The committed Christian should adhere to the teachings of Christ, regardless of political party, political correctness and public opinion.
