Charge dropped against lawmaker

HARRISBURG (AP) — A judge has withdrawn one of eight charges against former Pennsylvania Sen. Robert Mellow in a bid-rigging case.

The state attorney general’s office said Friday the charge had to do with allegations that Mellow didn’t report a 2007 dinner held in his honor as a campaign contribution.

The 70-year-old former lawmaker from Lackawanna County still faces seven more serious charges in what authorities say was a bid-rigging scandal involving the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. No trial date has been set.

Mellow’s lawyer and an attorney general’s spokeswoman declined to comment on why the charge was withdrawn.

He is currently serving time in a federal prison in Georgia on unrelated charges of mail fraud and filing a false tax return.
