Driver faces trial in traffic death
A Pine Township man will face trial in Indiana County Court on charges stemming from a wreck that resulted in the death of a passenger in his car while he fled from the state police.
Kevin Vasbinder Jr., 22, of Mentcle, on Wednesday waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges that were upgraded this week to include one count of homicide by motor vehicle.
Alyssa Stancombe, 16, of Ernest, was critically injured the night of April 18 when Vasbinder lost control of his car on Indian Springs Road. The vehicle crossed Route 954, flipped over and sank in a pond.
Vasbinder was thrown from the car and suffered minor injuries, but Stancombe was trapped in the submerged car and died from her injuries on April 27 at a Pittsburgh hospital.
Vasbinder was allowed to remain free on $50,000 bond to await court action.
