Firefighters battle wildfire
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — Volunteer firefighters from three communities battled a wildfire early Tuesday morning along Cribbs Road at Dutch Run Road.
The Elderton fire department responded to the first alarm at 1:13 a.m. About 10 minutes later the Creekside fire company was also called. And, at 1:44 a.m., Plumville volunteers were also dispatched.
Peter Yacovone, chief of the Creekside department, said the area that burned was fairly small, probably less than two acres, but standing timber and deadfall were burning when he arrived on the scene in Washington Township.
Yacovone said no cause for the fire was evident, and a state Forestry Service agent may be asked today to investigate.
Some of the firefighters were on the scene for three hours.
Yacovone said the blaze in the middle of the night that required multiple companies emphasizes the critical need some local fire departments have for more volunteers.
