Jury convicts mother in toddler's death
A 27-year-old mother being held to blame for her son's accidental bathtub drowning was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and other crimes on Wednesday afternoon in Indiana County Court.
After deliberating for several hours, the jury agreed with prosecutors that Tonya Thomas bears responsibility for the death of her son, 13-month-old Ryden. Ryden drowned in the tub in their home in White Township after his mother left him and two siblings unattended last year.
Aside from assault and manslaughter charges, Thomas was found guilty of reckless endangerment and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
President Judge William Martin allowed her to remain free on bond until her sentencing, which has been scheduled for July 21.
