Man charged in tot's assault
BURRELL TOWNSHIP — A toddler remains in critical condition at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh and his mother’s husband is charged with causing his injuries, Indiana County District Attorney Patrick Dougherty said this morning.
Juan Campbell was arrested and charged Friday night with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment.
He was held in the Indiana County Jail and bail was set this morning at $150,000 by Magistrate George Thachik, according to jail officials.
His age was not reported.
Dougherty said Campbell was alone with the 20-month-old boy at 88 Susan Drive early Friday morning when the child suffered serious injuries to his head and torso.
Citizens’ Ambulance Service responded to a call to the home at 2:33 a.m., and the child was transported first to Indiana Regional Medical Center and then to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.
The child’s mother, Jamie Lynn (Patterson) Campbell, was hospitalized at the time after giving birth to another child, Dougherty said.
He said Campbell is not the injured child’s father.
He said the charges were filed after state police in Indiana executed a search warrant at the home Friday afternoon.
Police had not issued a report as of this morning and could not be reached for comment.
Dougherty said the investigation is ongoing and would not describe the child’s injuries.
He also did not name the child.
