Man jailed for fatally beating his dog
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh man was sentenced to nine to 23 months in jail for fatally beating his German shepherd, and was jailed immediately when his wife balked at surrendering another dog.
Darwin Jones, 60, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in June after a witness told police she saw him hit the animal 30 to 40 times with a 6-foot pry bar in January.
Allegheny County Judge Donald Machen offered to give Jones 30 days to report to jail, provided he let police seize another dog.
Jones agreed, but the judge called him back into the courtroom and ordered him immediately to jail after overhearing Jones’ wife refuse to surrender the other dog.
Jones told the judge he beat the dog after it ate rat poison. But the judge believed Jones merely lost his temper.
