FORD CITY — A Westmoreland County man was found safe early today more than six hours after disappearing in the waters of Crooked Creek in Burrell Township, Armstrong County, authorities reported.

Mark Starr, 47, of New Kensington, had suffered minor injuries and was “talking and cold” when he was located at 12:14 a.m. in a barn near the creek, state police at Kittanning said.

The search for Starr began before 7 p.m. Sunday when troopers were told that Starr had been wading in the creek near Laurel Loop Lane, slipped in the water and was swept downstream in fast-moving waters.

Burrell Township firefighters helped search for Starr but gave up the effort after dark, state police reported in a news release issued just before 11 p.m. Police did not indicate how Starr was located.

Troopers reported this morning that Starr first was taken to the Burrell Township fire station, and then was sent by ambulance to Armstrong County Memorial Hospital for treatment.
