PITTSBURGH (AP) — A man who ran from a traffic stop in Pittsburgh was shot by officers after he pulled a weapon and fired at an officer, wounding him in both legs, police said.

Officers patrolling in East Liberty pulled a vehicle over at the Port Authority East Busway parking lot shortly after 3:30 a.m. Sunday, but one man opened a rear door and fled.

Police said the man couldn’t escape because he was in a fenced-in area, and he turned toward the officer, pulled a weapon and opened fire.

Police said both officers returned fire, hitting him in the upper torso. The 18-year-old Homewood resident was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition.

Police said the injured officer, who has been on the force for two years, is in stable condition.
