GREEN TOWNSHIP — A preliminary hearing for a man suspected of shooting his neighbor to death early Saturday has been set for June 29.

Online court records show James Eugene Lantz, 27, of Commodore, is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. in Indiana District Court before District Judge Guy Haberl, who was on call for all criminal incidents in the county over the weekend.

State police charged that Lantz mortally wounded Derrick Davis, 23, of Commodore, after the pair argued and fought along Lovejoy Road.

The fight culminated at just before 1 a.m. when Lantz retrieved a firearm and shot Davis in the upper chest, police said.

Davis fell wounded in the lawn between two houses at 54 and 66 Lovejoy Road, police reported.

Davis was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:14 a.m.

Lantz fled the area but returned at 10:40 a.m. Saturday and was taken into custody without incident, according to a report.

Troopers at the Indiana station reported a second arrest at the scene several hours after the shooting.

Beverly Stewart, of Commodore, approached investigators at 6:40 a.m. while she was intoxicated and became disruptive, according to a news release. Stewart, 32, was cited with public drunkenness, troopers reported.
