Re-sentencing set for Orie Melvin

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A judge is ordering former state Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin to appear before him next week to adjust her sentence on campaign corruption charges.

The order set the hearing for Tuesday. Allegheny County Judge Lester Nauhaus told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the change will be a technicality. He says he meant to sentence her to three one-year terms of house arrest to run consecutively to one another, rather than three years of house arrest. The judge also ordered Melvin to send a photograph of her wearing handcuffs to other judges in the state with a letter apologizing for her crimes.

Prosecutors say she used her taxpayer-paid court staff and those of her sister, a former state senator, to work on her campaign for the state’s highest court.federal grants.
