SALEM TOWNSHIP — A Saltsburg man died in a one-vehicle crash at about 5:35 a.m. today on Route 286 in Westmoreland County.

State police at the Kiski Valley station said Stanley Deren, 56, of Saltsburg, was traveling west when he took evasive action for an unknown reason.  Police said his car slid sideways, left the highway and went through a yard before dropping into a creek bed and striking an embankment.

Deren was not wearing a seat belt, police said, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy Westmoreland County coroner who ruled the cause of death as blunt force trauma.

Volunteer firefighters from the Bell Township Fire Department assisted state troopers at the scene.
