Two men killed in off-road vehicle on state highway
HYDETOWN (AP) — Two men riding in an off-road vehicle on a state highway in northwestern Pennsylvania were killed in a head-on crash when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle.
State police said Saturday the crash occurred at 6:50 p.m. Friday on state Route 8 outside Hydetown in Crawford County.
Police said the victims, both from Titusville, were in an off-road vehicle known as a “side by side” because of its seating configuration. It’s illegal to drive such vehicles on public highways
“You can cross a highway at (an angle of) 90 degrees, but you can’t drive up and down the road,” said Trooper Adam Haun, who investigated the accident.
The driver, Devon Patrick Beach, 22, was flown to a hospital in Erie, where he later died. His passenger, Ryan James Rose, was declared dead at the scene.
Neither man was wearing a seat belt police said.
The 70-year-old driver of the other car, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
