SPRING CHURCH — A fatal two-truck crash closed state Route 56 for several hours Wednesday between Balsiger and Ridge roads, just north of Apollo in the Spring Church area of Kiskiminetas Township.
Armstrong County Deputy Coroner Robert Bower said Michael Shane Bailey, 35, of Vandergrift, Westmoreland County, was killed in the 8:45 a.m. crash involving a dump truck belonging to a local landscaping company and a truck loaded with coal.
“The coal truck was heading south on Route 56,” Bower said. “The dump truck was headed north on 56. It appears that the dump truck was making a left turn into the Lutheran Church Road when he was struck by the coal truck.”
The driver of the truck belonging to Cutting Edge Lawn Care & Landscaping of Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, was taken to a Pittsburgh-area hospital.
The name of the driver of the coal truck was not released.
Kiskiminetas Township police are investigating the crash, with the help of a state police reconstruction unit. Route 56 remained closed into late afternoon, forcing the Apollo-Ridge School District to adjust its schedule. Apollo-Ridge said it dismissed its high school and middle school students at 2 p.m. in an effort “to keep departure time as normal as possible for the elementary students.”
Bower said an autopsy was scheduled for Friday, after which funeral arrangements would be handled by Dunmire-Kerr & Rowe Funeral Home in Vandergrift.
