The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has designated Dr. Amanda Poole as an ARC Appalachian Teaching Fellow for the 2012-13 academic year.

She is responsible for teaching and administering the Appalachian Teaching Project (ATP) on the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Led by the Consortium of Appalachian Centers and Institutes, the ATP offers students a unique opportunity to conduct active community-based research on their campuses. They are invited to present their findings to an audience of their peers and ARC administrators in Arlington, Virginia every December.

As an ARC Appalachian Teaching Fellow, Poole was responsible for overseeing local efforts to identify assets in Indiana County that can form the basis for sustainable development initiatives. Poole's students partnered with a local grassroots community organization, Coalition for a Healthy County, to conduct interviews, conduct a survey of CHC supporters, and create video interviews of partner and affiliated organizations that are working on issues of sustainability in the county.

This project explored people's visions for sustainability in Indiana County, and will help to inform the long term priorities and planning of CHC.

Poole is assistant professor of anthropology and has been working with IUP's Center for Northern Appalachian Studies, which develops and facilitates curricula and programs dealing with the Appalachian region. In addition, she has conducted research in Northern Appalachia, with particular interests in the social, health, and environmental dynamics associated with energy extraction and production.

Created by Congress, the ARC is a unique partnership between the federal government and the governors of the 13 Appalachian states designed to improve economic opportunities throughout the region. Additional information on ARC can be found at
