Recently my wife and I attended a fundraising event held by the Saltsburg Volunteer Fire Department. The beautiful firemen’s hall was filled to capacity with all the participants enjoying each other’s company and a seemingly endless supply of delicious food and beverage. This was quite a festive event. We were impressed by the hard work that went into pulling this fundraiser off.
As the afternoon continued, an emergency call came across the department’s radios. Without hesitation. the volunteers dropped what they were doing and reported to their commanding officer for his instructions. After a brief discussion, I believe, it was determined that two volunteers would respond to the call and everyone else could return to their duties at the event.
The manner in which these people responded did not necessarily surprise me, but it put an exclamation point on the fact that they are willing to give up anything they are doing to go to the aid of others in need. It made me think about how these volunteers give up their personal lives each and every time they answer a call.
These dedicated people are volunteers, but they are professionals in every sense of the word.
I would encourage anyone reading this to consider going to their local V.F.D. and find out what it takes to become a volunteer. Although we all can’t be firefighters, we can support local departments through monetary donations and supporting their fundraisers.
I hope I never need the services of the fire department, but I am comforted by the fact that throughout Indiana County there are many dedicated volunteers such as the Saltsburg Fire Department.
