Nancy Sherry-Helsel, real estate agent, and Jerry Gillette, retired engineer, attended the April 2 Kiwanis Club of Indiana breakfast to inform members of plans to build a miracle league baseball field in Indiana County.
With the support of the YMCA of Indiana County, Miracle League of Indiana County provides children with mental and/or physical challenges a chance to experience playing baseball in a league-based environment.
The first miracle field was built in the year 2000 and there are fields in Cranberry Township, Altoona and the Pittsburgh area. There are more than 250 miracle fields that have been built in the United States.
Two percent of the children living in Indiana County have disabilities and 6 percent of adults have disabilities. The Indiana County miracle league field will also be available to disabled children and adults and bordering counties.
The children will participate in a six-week training program and six-week fall program.
The Indiana County miracle league field will be built on the YMCA property and will be completed, it is hoped, in the fall of 2014.
Guests at the breakfast included Circle K members Stephanie Phillips and Katelyn Krissinger and the new Circle K president, Megan Szymanski.
Circle K is having its end of the year banquet on April 19 and invites Kiwanians to join them.
They are also having a fundraiser at Ruby Tuesday on April 20.
President Wayne Obitz announced that the Kiwanis Club of Punxsutawney is holding a golf tournament on April 27 and has asked Kiwanis Club of Indiana members to participate.
Fred Yun, secretary, reminded members of the April 4 board meeting at 5:30 p.m. at Eat’n Park, the Friday leadership workshop at the Crimson Hawk Center, the Friday Johnstown K family night beginning at 6:30 p.m., the Saturday Johnstown Pancake Day and the Saturday Kiwanis Club of Indiana trivia night.
Members are asked to find sponsors, trivia teams, baskets, gifts and round sponsors to help make trivia night successful.
