In a windy and chilly season opener, Penns Manor plated 16 runs in the third inning and thumped Northern Cambria, 18-2, in a Heritage Conference baseball game that was shortened to three innings due to the mercy rule Wednesday in Kenwood.
With the game knotted 2-2, the Comets capitalized on five hits and four errors to score 16 runs in the bottom of the third.
Penns Manor, which committed one error to the Colts’ six, outhit Northern Cambria, 9-1.
Kasey Jewart went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs for Penns Manor.
Luke Popovich singled, scored two runs and drove in two runs, and Mike Hildebrand singled, scored two runs and drove in a run. Adam Tomayko, Luke Ruddock and Luke Kowalski each singled, scored two runs and drove in a run, and Seth Peterman scored two runs and drove in a run.
Peterman tossed a one-hitter, striking out three and walking four.
Adam Polites doubled, drove in a run and scored a run for Northern Cambria.
Losing pitcher Stephen Prasko struck out three and walked none in two innings.
Penns Manor plays host to Blacklick Valley on Friday.
DERRY 4, LAUREL HIGHLANDS 2: Derry’s Zack Zimmerman ripped a two-run single in the top of the sixth inning to lift the Trojans to a win over host Laurel Highlands in a WPIAL Section 2-AAA game at Hutchinson Field.
With two outs in the sixth, Zimmerman broke a 2-2 tie by smacking a two-run base hit that plated Cameron Gerhard and Johnny Panizzi.
Luke Maloy singled and scored two runs for the Trojans.
Robby Hebenthal tossed a complete-game three-hitter, fanning seven and walking two.
Derry (2-0, 1-0 section) plays host to Yough on Friday.
