MARION CENTER — On March 8, 16 students from Marion Center Area High School participated in the Regional History Day competition at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
These students completed eight projects on a wide variety of topics all related to the 2013 Theme: Turning Points in History: People, Ideas and Events.
Nine students representing three projects from Marion Center placed at the regional contest and will now move on to the State History Day competition in the Cumberland Valley School District on May 3-4.
The winners are: Julia Snickles in the senior division with an individual performance titled “Talkies: Bringing Sound to the Film Industry”; Reed Hertzler, Adam White, Nathan Tyger and Jakeb Rising in the senior division with a group exhibit titled “Russia’s Rebirth: Joseph Stalin and the Battle of Stalingrad”; and Kara Kutsch, Michaela Lydic, Allison Fleming and Bailey Cribbs in the junior division with a group performance titled “The Orphan Train: Street Urchins Seeking Hope, Finding Despair.”
Kenneth E. Behring National History Day began as a small competition in 1974 and has evolved into a yearly national competition in which nearly half a million students participate.
If the students’ work places well at the state competition, they may move on to the national competition this June at the University of Maryland. Good luck to all of the local students hoping to advance.
